Using pinyin effectively for Chinese vocabulary

Separate three information layers

A Chinese vocabulary item should clearly separate characters, meaning, and pinyin. If context is available, place it in its own field. This keeps pinyin from becoming part of the character answer.

Try recall before revealing pinyin

When characters are the answer, attempt recognition or typing first. Reveal pinyin only when checking pronunciation. If it is always visible, the eye can rely on Latin letters and ignore character structure.

Keep the tones

Avoid storing only unmarked letters. Tone marks help preserve pronunciation from the beginning. Use forms such as gōngsī instead of gongsi whenever possible.

Compare text-to-speech output with pinyin, but do not treat a machine voice as the only authority. For important words, also check a dictionary with native audio.

Use short sentences

A short context sentence shows the characters that commonly surround the word. After learning the meaning, read the sentence aloud and try to recognise the target without pinyin.
